Although I had previously been to watch city on a few occasions, Friday 28th April against Birmingham at Maine Road was the game I fell in love with them. The game was tense, with city needing to win to stay in the hunt for automatic promotion. Richard Taylor’s goal (just about the only thing he did for us all season) sealed the win. The place erupted, but then nervously waited until the final whistle ended the game in a 1-0 victory. Suddenly the players were mobbed by invading fans, and as I sat on my dads shoulders on the pitch at the age of 9, I realised I was destined to support city.

April 2000..Having followed in my dads footsteps in becoming a City fan aged 7 I was enrolled in the Junior Blues and was hooked ever since. Some 13 years later I made it over to my first match. After getting off the train at Victoria Station at 10am I couldn’t wait any longer and got a taxi to Maine Road. As we neared the ground, with the Kippax in view, the butterflies started in my stomach. Once the ground opened I was straight in and sitting in my seat a good hour and a half before kick off but it was brilliant, just soaking up the atmosphere as the crowds piled in. The game itself wasn’t great but I couldn’t have cared, Goater nipping in in front of Murphy for the first and a close range strike from Jeff Whitley sealed the win. But most of all I remember Danny Tiatto and his seemingly never ending energy, crunching tackles and all round commitment. Moving on up was played at the end of the game and we went on to get promoted that season. I travel over from N Ireland any time my wallet allows it. City til I die!!

Before this game I was on the verge of becoming a United fan but my Dad took me to see City at Maine Road. I was 7 at the time and my view was limited in the North Stand so the only goal I saw was Jeff Whitley’s consolation goal in the 80th minute. So to me it was like City had won. Since then I have been City. I would consider myself to be a die-hard fan now. Most city fans remember the 1999 play-off final win but I wasn’t into football then so my favourite memory is the Derby win at Old Trafford in early 2008. The defeat at Maine Road warned me of City’s inconsistency but I am City Till I Die.

My first match was in 2000 at Maine Road, we were playing Tranmere Rovers and needed a win to keep ahead of Ipwsich Town in 3rd. All I remember is getting soaked in the uncovered section of the stadium as my uncle liked it there, and it BUCKETED for the whole match.
Still, a win is a win and I remember Shaun Goater robbing the goalie of the ball to send us on our way to a 2-0 win. Happy days!

This was my first game i’d ever been to. a 2-0 win against Bradford City with paul dickov and Alfie Haaland with the goals. the atmoshphere at maine road that day was fantastic. there’s not a lot i can remember from that day as it was 8 years ago, but it was amazing and i’ve seen many more games since.
