Feb 12th 2000 City 3-1 Norwich. What a day, my first time at a City game…and what a boring 1-1 draw we were heading for until Joe Royle pulled in Mark Kennedy to the sideline and made the gesture for Kennedy to cut inside the right back (Mark was trying to go outside all afternoon) 5 minutes later it was 3-1 with 2 exquisite strikes from the Dub. The icing was laid so thick on the cake that day as the Rags lost 3-0 in Newcastle. To top it off that day too, I had a radio so nothing really beats delivering the news to thousands of your fellow City fans that the rags had conceded a goal, whats even better I got to do it 3 times!!! We headed to the Nelson after for a few pints and when the crowd discovered we were paddies over for the game they broke in to song “There’s only one Mark Kennedy”. Magic!!!

My first City experience was a dream. I was on sprint vacation from school in the States and visiting my future wife who was studying in London. Through the MCIVTA newsletter, I met Ash B. who had a box in the Kippax Stand and he graciously invited us to attend the match.

We went to training on the Friday before the match, met all the players and Joe Royle and got a tour of Maine Road.

I couldn’t sleep Saturday night in anticipation of the crucial top-of-the-table clash vs. Charlton the following day. Goater scored a 20 yard volley off of his shin from a floated Ian Bishop pass. He was practicing this very move during training on Friday, albeit with his foot and not his shin! City dominated possession but “lacked the cutting edge” as Joe Royle often said at the time.

Charlton tied the match in the second half, but it didn’t matter. It got City out of their rut of form and sent us on our way to the Premiership.

I’ll never forget the hospitality the club showed to me, my wife and my friend Ash. I’ll never forget the chill that ran down my spine the first time I heard ‘Blue Moon’ or ‘Stand Up If You Love City’ ringing through the rafters. As an American, I was hard pressed to think of one professional sports organization in North America who would treat a complete stranger the way we were treated. Total class.

I’ve since been back once to see us draw vs. WBA at Eastlands in December 2004 (The Elk’s last goal for the club), and can’t wait to take our new daughter to her first match soon.

I know I am I’m sure I am I’m City ’till I die!

Keep the faith,
My 1st at COMS was last season against Bolton. 4-2, it was a perfect match to see City show off their talent particuarly Martin Petrov. I now have Petrov on the back of my city shirt because his skill and pace opened my eyes to the beautiful world of football. Merry Christmas guys.

Within days of being born in April 2000 my son Thomas was enrolled into the Junior Blues and I’d bought him his first City kit! We’d returned to the Premier League for the first time since 1996 and his first game was a League Cup second round first leg against Gillingham at Maine Road. The result was 1-1! It was freezing but it didn’t matter because in addition to being well wrapped up I’d put him inside my coat! He attended many games after that including the memorable last game at Maine Road and first ever game at the City of Manchester stadium – I’m proud of that and hopefully in years to come so will he.
