If ever a decade displayed the full range of emotions it is this. The Blues challenged and entertained during the early part of the decade, becoming founder members and key figures behind the creation of the Premier League, but in 1997 dropped to the third level of English football for the only time – the club’s lowest ever level. Under Joe Royle a fighting spirit was established – with the motto Pride In Battle becoming the rallying cry – and with everything appearing lost he regenerated the side. A dramatic play-off final in 1999 became the defining game as City were re-born. The early decade heroes such as Niall Quinn, Uwe Rosler, Peter Reid, Keith Curle and Peter Beagrie were joined by players who typified City’s fightback such as Andy Morrison and Shaun Goater.

My brother took me to my first game against Ipswich, It was a cold wednesday night at Maine road. We were running late and as we came up the stairs all the crowd jumped in joy for the first goal, I thort we had missed it but it was chalked off. The seats we had werent the best I couldnt see the goal at the far end of the pitch. Thankfully for me both goals were in the goal I could see and city won 2-0. Looking forward to taking my 2 little boys to there first game.

My dad took me to my first city game against Derby county at maine road. In truth he only took me so he could see Peter Shilton! As it happens Shilton didn’t play but what a game. TC was sent off for a trip in the box. This was the days before 25 substitutes so Niall Quinn went in net and saved the penalty. i think Dean saunders took the penalty, but not 100 % sure. Can’t wait for my 2 and 3 year old to go to their first games.

City 3 v. Barnsley 1, October 1999 – was studying as a postgraduate student in Manchester, never been to an English football match. On a whim, bought tix to Maine Road, Maine Stand – and the singing, the atmosphere, the ground, all bowled me over. Fall in love, for LIFE. Feet The Goat (twice!) & Super Kevin Horlock!

After 5 or 6 years of supporting City from afar in a country domintated by Liverpool and United fans, my first pilgrimage to Maine Road came at the start of the 1991-1992 season, August 24th, for the visit of Crystal Palace. We’d won our first two matches, beating Coventry and Liverpool, and after grinding out a battling 3-2 win, we were top of the old First Division. I recall some goals from Mark Brennan, and I think one from SWP’ dad. To round it all off, a huge haul of autographs was crowned by the addition of the immortal Colin Bell. Amazing

My first City game was at home to Bradford in November 1997, an ‘old’ division one game. My brother had just passed his driving test, I remember him being quite nervous about driving to Maine Road for the first time. We sat near the back of the main stand. With the game at 0-0, and the game almost over, my brother wanted to leave. I convinced him to stay until the final whistle, then City scored in stoppage time ! I can’t remember who scored it, but I remember the goal very clearly. I was hooked for life. Unfortunately we got relegated in this season, but it never put me off !
