I was only 5 at the time, so i can’t remember much. But i can remember how bitterly cold it was. I’d been given the ticket the day before as my Christmas present. I remember cheering when the goal went in, only for my Grandad to tell me that it was Port Vale who had scored, and not city. A 1-0 loss to Port Vale isn’t the greatest of first games to attend at Maine Road, but it’s been the first of many.

april 27 1996 vs aston villa won game 1-0. my first ever football game my dad took me and i was 7 years old. i remember my dad trying to learn me all the words to the songs for years and when i was at the game i just couldnt wait for the first song to start out. it was the best experiance ever eventually being there watching it live instead of on the tv, first half of the game went by and even though we hadnt scored i still had a smile on my face like a cheshire cat. it was so great seeing the players live. anyhow second half of the game started and all the stadium broke into an all mighty song of joy for manchester city. well we did get a score thankfully as thats what i really wanted to see. i jumped up of my seat and my dad lifted me up so i could see the all the players celebrating the goal. i looked about and all the fans faces were lit up with joy i had never seen so much love for something in facial expresions befor ethis minute. when i got home from the game i couldnt stop talking about it for weeks to everyone. infact i went on that much my dad told me if i didnt mention it for one week he would take me to another next week so i did and we certainly went again. im 21 now and still cant get enough ive been to so many games since then and this oppurtunity would mean alot.

The first memory I have of going to see City was with my Dad in 1996 when I was 11. It was against Liverpool and was the last game of the season. City were facing relegation and after going 2-0 down, we fought back to 2-2.

I remember seeing the players taking the ball up to the corner flag to play out time, so we just assumed the other teams were losing too. We were sat in the main stand behind the tunnel and suddenly, we saw Niall Quinn, who’d just been subbed, running out towards the pitch shouting something and waving his arms. I didn’t have a clue what was going on but everyone else started getting up from their seats and shouting too. My Dad explained to me what was happening, we needed a win but the players think a draw is enough. I’ve never since seen anyone display what Big Niall displayed that day. True passion for the club.

The game ended with us being relegated. It was the first time I’d seen City and I was absolutely devastated. I thought I was a jinx and cried all the way home.

My Dad cheered me up with a McDonalds on the way home if I promised not to tell Mum (who had already starting cooking tea).

I’ll never forget what he said to reassure me that day.

“Don’t worry Son, we’ll be back. This is the best Club in the world and there are no fans like ours, so there’s no way we’ll stay down. We’ll be back soon, bigger and stronger than ever”

Dad was right.

It was a great game and very hard not to stand up and cheer when City scored, though I was jumping up and down inside! It was 1-1 in the end. I had a fantastic time and was totally sold on City. The only sad thing was that our coach was bricked in the car park.

Friday night at the Student Union and a group of friends decide to take in a game. We headed over to Maine Road for the game versus Birmingham City the following day.

I recall it was a tough game and, despite coming from a family of Burnley fans, I bought a City shirt before the game and I can still see Kinkladze putting the penalty away and the crowd cheering.

After the game we were among the last home fans to leave the ground. I can report that the Birmingham City fans were not very happy with the result that day.
