Despite a FA Cup final appearance early in the decade (1981), success was hard to come by with relegation to Division Two coming twice (1983 & 1987) followed by exciting promotions (1985 & 1989). The glamour of the Seventies had faded but a new spirit evolved focused around talented young players such as Paul Simpson, Paul Lake, David White, Andy Hinchcliffe and Ian Brightwell. The FA Youth Cup was won for the first time in 1986 and by the end of the eighties City fans, who had hit the headlines themselves for their creation of the ‘banana craze’, could look back on many great individual games and the quality of their talented young players.

I REMEMBER GOING TO THE GAME WITH MY BROTHER, GETTING ON THE SOUTHERN CEMENTRY BUS AT PICCADILLY GARDENS. WHEN WE ARRIVED AT MAINE ROAD WE WOULD GO INTO THE CITY CHIPPY BEFORE WALKING ROUND TO THE KIPPAX STAND, WE WOULD WALK UP THE STAIRS AT THE CORNER OF THE KIPPAX TO SEE AN AMAZING SIGHT- THE MAINE STAND! WE WOULD THEN GO AND STAND RIGHT ON THE HALF WAY LINE AT ONE OF THE GREEN GATES. AT HALF TIME WE WOULD GET A DRINK FROM THE SELLERS WHO WOULD WALK AROUND THE GROUND. THE ACTUAL GAME FLEW BY. ALTHOUGH WE LOST THE GAME 2-1, I FELL IN LOVE WITH THE PLACE VERY QUICKLY AND I WAS ALWAYS ASKING MY BROTHER WHEN I COULD GO AGAIN.

My first City game was versus sheffield united I was taken there by my Dad and my uncle. The 2 things that stick in my mind was coming up the main stand steps and looking at the mighty kippax, it really was a superb sight. The second thing that sticks in my mind from that day was Peter Reid getting upended by vinny jones in the first 5 or 6 seconds and getting a yellow card for it, all of the ground went beserk and i thought to myself this is the place for me. Passion, Atmosphere and City all that I need!

I couldn’t tell you the exact date, but, I went with two mates from sixth form to Maine Road and stood in the Kippax and thought the atmosphere was great. I had supported City since 5 but this was the first experience live. We lost 3-0 to Liverpool, I remember Sammy Lee bagging a hat-trick, but, that didn’t matter. I had jumped on the roller coaster!!

June 3, 1981. Living in the Vancouver Canada area at a time when there was next to no football on the TV I’d been a City fan for 10 years but had never seen the lads play.
I became a fan when as a youngster I played for a team in sky blue. I had also played for a team called Rangers aand Rodney Marsh transfered from QP Rangers to City. I took those two facts as a sign as to which team was for me.
I was a season ticket holder for the Vancouver Whitecaps when it was announced that Man City would play an exhibition game vs the Caps at old Empire Stadium.
I’d followed the Whitecaps to New York to see them win the Soccer Bowl in 1979. Ironically Rodney Marsh was playing for Tampa Bay in that game. But despite that I was cheering for City in that game in Vancouver. However it wasn’t a great day for City as the Whitecaps crushed them 5-0.
Sadly that still remains the lone time I’ve seen City live. I’ve never been in Britain when the season was on. However I will be in London this March when we are at Chelsea. It will be a couple weeks before my fiftieth birthday. So if you want to swing me a ticket….
Just kidding. Always proud to be a fan.

After watching City win 6-0 on my first visit to Maine Road,a lifetime as a blue was assured. I was 15 and went with my mate Andrew Crane. we stood on the kippax and were swept down the steps six times!!!

Thursday night, 6th Feb, 1985. My first City game. My Dad managed to get hold of a couple of tickets for the second replay between City and Watford. We took our seats in the North stand, about half way up, behind the goal. It was freezing. I don’t remember much about the game, apart from seeing John Barnes wearing tights and gloves in the second half. We lost 3-1 in typical City fashion, but I was hooked. The atmosphere at Maine Road was electric. A very special place indeed.

I had grown up supporting my local team Altrincham and had no allegiance to either city or united (though I never liked united!!). All that changed in 1985 when I went with my elder brother and his mates to watch City play Notts County away on May Bank Holiday. I was 18. If City won they were promoted to the old div 1 and were playing a team who were already relegated – so there were hardly any Notts County fans there – it was full of City – many in fancy dress. The atmosphere was superb – which was more than can be said for the football. By half time we were 3-0 down and it was kicking off everywhere – some had even got in the dressing room and I remember Billy McNeil coming out on the pitch trying to calm everyone down. I remember thinking – if this team is so bad how come everyone is here – whats the attraction? I suppose there are thousands who still think that now but I know from that day I was hooked…we ended up losing 3-2 – Paul Simpson got both our goals…..and 23 years later I’m still trying to work out what the magic is but I know it will always be there.

Going into the Kippax stand at an early age with my brother was something special,we would always stand in the same spot at a gate right on the half way line. At half time we would always get a drink from the trolley sellers that would go around the ground, even though we lost the game 2-1 the roar from the KIPPAX when we scored was ELECTRIFYING !!
