Mercer & Allison’s partnership came to an end but not before they made City the first side to win both a major European trophy and a major domestic trophy in the same season (1970 – League Cup and European Cup Winners Cup). They had also established City as regular League challengers and by the end of the decade the Blues had appeared in a total of four major finals (winning 3), and had come close to winning the title twice (missing it by a point on each occasion). The Seventies was a period of high glamour and entertainment.

24th April 1973
City 2 Sunderland 2
Sitting on the top deck of the 41 bus from Sale to Moss Side swishing over the inky puddles on the Parkway. Arriving at Maine Road to be greeted by the noise of touts, louts and fans. The wrinkled old codger at the turnstile with his bronchitic laugh, the pungent smell of old men, cheap tobacco and draft beer filling the air. I took to my seat to see an oasis view of lush green turf under a slate grey sky, the deafening noise of 54,000 as the sky blue team of City took to the field; a hot vimto with its centre of the sun heat, a dodgy pie packed with mystery meat and good natured but foul language all around. A paper on the way home with a picture of a topless Miss Pink sporting only a sky blue bikini bottom and a wide Mancunian smile.
Burnt mouth, indigestion, a naked lady, three new swear words for school on Monday a great match and a very exciting 2-2 draw.
I couldn’t wait for the next match, I still can’t.

I had just come to live in the area and was looking for some football one evening so I went along to this League Cup evening match which City won 3-1 I think. Marsh. Bell. Lee etc. Little did I know what was to come! 36 years later and still going! Joys and heartache aplenty!

AS I WAS PLAYING OUTSIDE MY BIG BROTHER DARREL CAME OUTSIDE TO ASK ME IF I WANTED TO GO TO THE FOOTBALL GAME. AS MY DAD WAS A BIG UNITED FAN I ASKED WHO TO WATCH.CITY OF COURSE HE REPLIED. HOURS LATER I WAS ON MY BROTHERS SHOULDERS IN THE KIPPAX SHOUTING FOR CITY. NEVER LOOKED BACK. THANK GOD FOR BIG BROTHERS. IF MY DAD HAD HIS WAY I WOULD BE A RED NOW. PS. TOO YOUNG TO REMEMBER WHO WE PLAYED OR THE SCORE.

My Dad took my twin sister Jo and I (age 5)to see City v Spurs at Maine Road it was very wet and muddy (think I’ve got the year right) and Tony Book fell over in the mud. Jo turned round and asked Dad if Tony Book would be trouble with his Mummy for getting his shorts dirty!!

As a pre-Xmas treat, not telling me where we were going, my dad took me to Maine Rd for the first time to watch The Blues against Notts Forest. I wore my first City kit (under 10 other layers)and I remember being sick (with excitement?) all over the pavement on Platt Lane on the way. Sitting in Platt Lane I remember the constant flashes all around the ground of cigarettes being lit in the gloom. The game finished 0-0 and I thought that it was the best thing I’d ever seen although my dad assures me it was dreadful. Anyway the dream started there. I’ve also just bought the programme again on e-bay as I wore the original into oblivion.
