I think it was a belated 9th birthday present. My Brother-in-law Ron took me. Can’t remember how we got there but the first time I saw the green pitch and witnessed the atmosphere, its something that doesn’t ever leave you.. We stood in the stand at the side of the kippax and I remember I couldn’t see so during the match I asked Ron if I could go on his shoulders to which he agreed – probably not a popular decision with people behind us and with hindsight, as a 9year old, I was probably too old to be going on anybody’s shoulders, anyway, after a short time Ron had to put me down because he was feeling dizzy.. Meanwhile on the pitch City were beating Liverpool 3-1 and thanks to “My first City game” I’ve been able to remind myself of two facts which, over time had been somewhat forgotten -A) who the city scorers were; channon, royle and kidd and B) I didn’t know the attendance – 52,000 – All in all it was an unforgettable day. I went on to persuade my brother that blue was the colour and I was proud to take my son to his first game at COMS.

1977 and City are in a 3 way battle for the champinship with Liverpool and Ipswich. A potential title decide looms at Maine Rd against Bobby Robsons Ipswich. The crowd was in excess of 42000 and for a yong lad more familar with watching Bury at Gigg lane infront of 3000 the atmosphere and buzz around the old ground was electric. A tight game saw City take the lead only for Ipswich to peg us back.Well into the second half and sat directly behind the nets in the Noth stand a corner was sent over and met by Dave I’ve got an Iron Head Watson. Nothing to unusual about that until you realise that Mr Iron head was actually stood on the edge of the 18 yard box. The ball flew towards the top corner faster than a Peter Lorimer thunderbolt and despite the valiant efforts of keeper and fullback blasted City back into the lead. City won and I was hooked. Cue 32 yrs of pain.

Me and my mate Malcolm Johnstone went to a night match to watch City V Derby County. It was a Wednesday night, we had never been to a football match before because we never had much, them days, but in school on that day we decided to save our dinner money and go to the game…we needed 29p in total…2p each way on the bus and 25p in the kippax… we were just 13 or 14 it was 1976-77 season I think, (maybe the year after) and we lost 3-1. Franny Lee our ex blue scored twice against us. Never forget that! We were two little boys in the standing area of the kippax surrounded by supporters who sang all the game through. we couldn’t wait to tell everyone in school that we had been to a City game. I remember me and Malcolm in the crowd that night singing and cheering along, we were so happy to be there and to date the experience has never left me.

I was brought up in Salford, with United fans as parents, I had no right to support City… but I did! I was 15 before I managed to get to Maine Road, my mate’s Dad had to work and his ticket was free. We got the football special from Salford Precinct (Bandit country for Blues) past another ground- outside Manchester and into Maine Road for the first time. Chelsea were the visitors, Peter Bonetti was in goal and the giant Mickey Droy at centre back, I thought we couldn’t score against them. We scored 6, beat them 6-2. Hat trick from Tueart, one for Barnes, one from Channon and an own goal from Graham Wilkins. I had the City bug, I got my first season ticket for my 16th Birthday the following year and had one ever since!

My First City game was against Ipswich Town in the Old First Division 2nd April 1977. I went with a group Of Kids from School ,It was the most exiting day of my then young life.We sat in the Platt lane Stand on the old wooden benches ( think they were painted maroon)I remember Big Dave Watson scoring the the winner with a belting header. The following season My Mum bought me a junior season ticket and have been a fan ever since.I am proud to say my Two oldest Sons and I are season Card holders in the South Stand. CTID

If my memory serves me right my first City game was in May 1977. Along with my mum and grandad we trudged off to Maine Road. I was immediately in awe at the size of the ground and pitch. City played Tottenham which was a coincidence as my dad originates from down the road from White Hart lane and was a fan. City won 5-0 and promptly caused Spurs to be relegated. I was obviously ecstatic and loved the constant standing up to celebrate as another goal went into the back of the net. After such an auspicious start some would say that, bearing in mind the trials and tribultions that City have experienced since, it has all been downhill for me as a true blue ever since!!!
