My school friend’s Dad had tried to get us into The Swamp for his son’s birthday but they were full so we ended up in the Main Stand as City & Wolves fought out a muddy 0-0 draw. I dimly remember a goal-bound shot stopping dead in the mud on the goal line only for Wolves to clear before any blue shirt could slide it into the net. I was 10 at the time & already a Blue.

City v Liverpool what a dream for your first match – but at aged 4 life was not just about football. Having spent the whole game kicking dust through a hole in the wooden floor of the Platt Lane Stand and seeing City lose 1-0 my Dad (a Burnley fan) said he wouldn’t take me again – but he did and I was hooked. Thanks Dad!

I had been a fan of City as a schoolboy in the 60’s reading their exploits in the newspapers but mainly as a reaction to my dad being a Utd fan but did not actually go to Maine Road till I was about 14yrs when a school friend Steve Garner and his dad took me. We used to always park near Hough End and walk through the park to the ground. I remember with genuine amazement walking into the stand and seeing the size of the pitch, how green it was, and how big Joe Corrigan was, he filled the goal. We got beat of course 2-0 I think but that did not matter I knew then that I was hooked. There really is only one City and once bitten thats it, you are hooked for life, good times and bad.

AS I WAS PLAYING OUTSIDE MY BIG BROTHER DARREL CAME OUTSIDE TO ASK ME IF I WANTED TO GO TO THE FOOTBALL GAME. AS MY DAD WAS A BIG UNITED FAN I ASKED WHO TO WATCH.CITY OF COURSE HE REPLIED. HOURS LATER I WAS ON MY BROTHERS SHOULDERS IN THE KIPPAX SHOUTING FOR CITY. NEVER LOOKED BACK. THANK GOD FOR BIG BROTHERS. IF MY DAD HAD HIS WAY I WOULD BE A RED NOW. PS. TOO YOUNG TO REMEMBER WHO WE PLAYED OR THE SCORE.

My first City game was against Forest in 1974, 3rd or 4th round of the FA cup I think. It was at the time that Sunday football was being trialed. I had to beg my Dad to let me go and watch football on a Sunday. City were the big club and Forest were no hopers. Duncan Macenzie however tore us apart that day and Forest won 4 1. I stood proudly with my scarf in the Trent End amongest the Forest fans with my mates and still follow the Blues almost 35 years on.
