My Dad took me to City v Middlesborough on Feb 18 1950 and this is the first game I can remember. We stood on the corner of the Platt Lane and Main Stands level with the goal line and my memory is of Bert Trautmann making a great leap to save a header from Wilf Mannion. They were both distinctive blonds and the programme notes for Mannion say that he was an automatic choice for England and one of the finest inside forwards in the game. I found one of my friends selling the very programme on ebay last year and pretended to bid a huge amount for it and he let me have it for free. There are other memories of being passed over peoples’ heads and sitting on the track with a huge sergeant complete with stick watching over us. Happy days.

I think I was about 7 or 8 and taken by two uncles to an evening midweek game? We caught the football special bus from Belle Vue to Maine Road. City beat Utd 3-2. The first team I can recall was – Trautmann, Meadows, Little; Barnes, Ewing, Paul; Fagan, Hayes,Revie, Johnstone, Clarke. I think my all time favorite player was Bobby Johnstone – a roly-poly magician at inside left ( in old money )signed from Hibs, and worth the admission on his own. I went to a lot of home games on my own from the age of about 10 onwards until I started playing at weekends. Happy Days!

I can’t remember when my first match was but I do remember being on the Kippax in pouring rain in a crowd of 85,000. However my most vivid memory is of going by coach to the Cup Final. We arrived in London well before lunch and decided to have a walk round. It was a hot day and my feet were getting sore so I bought a pair of open sandals and off we went to the match.
When City scored their first goal my husband jumped up in the air and landed on my bare toes (all 6 ft. 14 stone of him). We were standing behind the goal where Bert Trautman broke his neck and I shall never forget the way he soldiered on and the protection Dave Ewing (who always got stick from supporters for his clumsiness) gave him – a truly heroic performance from both of them!

My brother-in-law took me to my first game back in the early 50’s, but for such a memorable game I find it strange that I cannot find any record of it. Two of the best goalkeepers in the country, and although it was Bartram’s day I went on to idolise Trautmann just like many others did. I think the score was about 6-0 for Charlton, and Bert got Red carded for refusing to stand up for a penalty kick right at the end.

At the time, like most lads who knew nothing about football, I supported United. My best pal was a City supporter who was taken to matches at Maine Road by his mother.
On one occasion, they dragged me along to a game against the mighty Billy Wright and his Wolves team. I went along to see City beaten. After about twenty minutes, City led 3-0 but Wolves scored just before half-time. The final score was City 4 Wolves 6 (six) !!!!
I went to more games at Maine Road during the following years and at the start of their relegation season 1962-63, I saw the light and declared to the world that from then on, I would support City. I attended every match played at Maine Road involving the first team until I missed the goalless Nottingham Forest game in 1977.
