By the start of the 1920s City were challenging for the League title, often watched by 40,000 capacity crowds at the old Hyde Road ground. To cope with the Club’s ever-growing support the Blues moved to Maine Road in 1923 and within six months a crowd of 76,166 – a record for any football match in Manchester at that point – proved the strength of City support. By the end of the decade the Blues had become the first Manchester side to play at Wembley Stadium. Stars of the period include Billy Meredith (whose long and distinguished playing career came to an end at the age of 49!), Tommy Johnson, Jimmy McMullan and Frank Roberts.

I was about 10 years old and I lived in Old Trafford so in theory I should have been a United fan. I had only ever been to 1 match before over at United’s ground. The memories of that day somehow were not cemented in my mind.
By chance of luck a staunch City fan managed to get me a ticket for a match at Maine road and I went along with him. It was a fantastic day when I watch City put 6 past Coventry and from then on in I was known as the lucky mascot. It seemed for years that whenever I went to a match City would win and win convincingly.
I can still see a City fan to this day gesturing toward the coventry fans as he held up his hands to simulate 6 – 1 to the Mighty City.
City till I die….

My Grandad is a massive blue who lived through the great days of Lee, Bell and Summerbee etc, and was always telling me tales of exciting games and memories he had at City. He took me to my first game when I was 8, and we were playing Southampton at home. This is the game when Kinkladze scored THAT goal….but we missed it because I had to take a trip to the bathroom!!!! The excitement walking up to Maine Road still makes the hairs on the back of my neck stand up. Thanks grandad, CTID

It wasnt my first city match, but one that i have fond memories of, even though i cant remember the final score, we were playing WBA.
my dad took me on a wednesday afternoon, school was closed as it was the 3 day week in britain, and there were no floodlights allowed, we sat in the north stand and as the match played there was an announcement that there was an IRA bomb in the ground and could we all look under our seats for it, i remember everyone laughing and saying this can only happen at city, i remember one bloke saying i bet its utd whose planted it, cos there jealous of us, being the best team in manchester, things havent changed we still are. – Mark

I was 6 and I can still remember seeing the pitch for the 1st time, I couldn’t believe how big it was!
I cant remember who scored for City, but I remember Tony Daley scored for Villa
22 years later I still get excited on match days. – Dan

My first game was in about 70/71 against Burnley. My dad took me and a lad down our street. We went in the Kippax and it was heaving. We stood at the back taking turns on my dads shoulders to see the game. A stranger saw what was going on and lifted me on his shoulders. He was a giant of a man and I had a fantastic view. 7 yrs old at the back of the kippax with the best view. The kippax was awesome then and I was hooked for life. – Mark Pemberton

I wasn’t there myself but my Grandad told me about being at Old Trafford for our record derby win. 6-1 at their place, can you imagine it? Wish I’d been there!
