I was 10 years old and had been waiting patiently for about 18 months for my brother, who is 9 years older, to take me to my first match. Parking at the Fallowfield end of Yew Tree Rd, we walked up towards Maine Rd. Call it what you will, but the ‘enthusiastic’ nature of some football followers at this time just made the experience a little more edgy – the atmosphere, even against Coventry, was bubbling under, although from what I can recall there was no trouble. ‘Shall we get him a Programme?’ asked my brothers mate, and all the lads concurred this would be a good idea. Not knowing what a ‘programme’ was, I remember feeling a little deflated when I was handed a small A5 colour pamphlet. However it did have the mighty Mick McCarthy on the cover. The thing I really remember is how, amongst the modest terraced houses, sprung the mighty Kippax. As I paid my 50p, I pushed the heavy-duty turnstyle which appeared to be trying to resist my entry into a lifetime of broken dreams. I was in. Climbing to the top of the concrete steps and taking in that first view at the top of the Kippax, the pitch looked smaller, but the ground more majestic than anything I had seen. We lost 1-0.

My Dad had got us into a box at Maine Road for my 5th birthday and although I was very young, it was so memorable. I remember being given a signed ball by the team and when we were eating our meals, the legend that is Mike Summerbee walked in to meet us, and I also remember he kept pinching my chips!! I also remember sitting in our seats about an hour after the game and seeing Garry Flitcroft leaving the ground, we shouted to him and he waved back at us! 1-1 wasn’t the greatest result in the world, but it was of my greatest days, City ‘Til I Die!!

My very first Manchester City Match i ever went to was against Sunderland on the 21st august 2003 at maine road. We won that game 3-0 in which one of city best players scored the last ever goal at maine road.
Loved that game
MARC-VIVIEN FOE was the player to score the last goal at maine road.
Later that year he tragically died playing for his beloved national team Cameroon.
Rest In Peace
Marc-Vivien Foe

My first ever City match was at Goodison Park, we drew 1-1. Mauritzio Gaudino scored for us, Terry Phelan got sent off and David Unsworth scored a late penalty for them to help them gain a point. I don’t know if it was watching the likes of Niall Quinn and Uwe Rosler warming up before the game, or the infectious atmosphere within the away contingency…but I was instantly smitten. City are like a drug to me, like having a deranged boyfriend that drives you crazy but you cannot help but love him…I just couldn’t help falling in love with blue. I’ve never looked backed and will ever have any regrets at where my love and loyalty lies. City Til I Die!

In the days when we used to fill our ground, my dad could only manage front row seats in the corner between the main and north stands. It was the opening day of the 95/96 season, Kinky’s debut as well if I remember rightly, I’d be lying if I told you I remembered whether the game was any good, come on I was only 7. What I do know is that Sheringham opened the scoring in the first half, and that early on in the second half Rosler not only levelled it up but proceeded to slide on his knees right in to the corner in which I was sitting. The crowd going mad and the goalscorer being a stones throw away was quite a lot to take for your first match, but its something I’ll always remember. The celebrations stand out and that’s probably what has had me going back ever since. Looking back a draw against a decent top 10 side wasn’t bad considering we ended up going down. Could be seen as false advertising for an impressionable young lad on his first visit. So 13 years and counting and I can’t imagine not having city and my seasoncard.
