My long expected first match was the away game at Newcastle on 20th October 08. Was a month into Uni and inbetween social circles. Soon as the tickets were available i had to buy one. Unfortunately, i bought tickets to sit in the home end with my friedns as it was cheaper. £17 to be truthful. Boy was that a mistake, as when Rob Styles awards a penalty i celebrated. Yep, surrounded by thousands of Newcastle fans, i actually screamed ‘yesssss’. Thankgod it was 2-2, otherwise i may not be writing this testimonial today
But know that i was always looking left at the singing city fans, and know that next year, i will definately be joining my fellow citizens.

My first match was January 1966 versus Preston North End at Maine Road. Many blues will recall this season as the beginning of a golden era. Joe Mercer had arrived as manager the season before and we were about to take everything before us in the next few seasons. This season we won the 2nd Division title. I remember very little of the actual game but the lead up to the match and the atmosphere inside the ground will stay with me to this day.
My Dad had been a City fan since the 1930’s and decided it was time his 5 year old son was to follow City as well. I can’t remember were we parked up, I think somewhere off Yew Tree Road, but I could not wait to get inside the ground. There were appeared to be hundreds of people hanging around on the forecourt in front of the Main Stand and for some reason I remember a man shouting at passersby holding high his “Save Jesus” placard.
Finally I’m through the turnstile and inside the ground, my first view of the pitch from high up in the Main Stand is etched on the memory. The smell of pipe smoke lingers and the volume of noise experienced for the first time. The pitch looked completely bare not much green grass on display but the white line markings illuminate the surface. The match I had waited to see for so long passed in a flash and ended 0 – 0. The crush through the exits back onto Maine Road was made and we went of home. At home Mum told my Dad a 0 – 0 match must have been boring and he had put me of City for life.
How wrong I was hooked, it just was the start. The next few seasons were brilliant, I thought this great I’ve got this for life beating United and winning cups. We all know it didn’t last but supporting City is for life whatever happens. There’s something about the club, you just can’t seem to get them out of your system no matter what. Whenever I look back to that day in January 1966 and see it as the start of beautiful friendship.

Unbeknown to me, at the time, my first game was an accurate representation of the rollercoaster life that is City. Losing 1-0 to the opposing side, taught me not only about the inconsistency of football, but also the definite loyality of the City fans. Watching my first game, I realised my love and passion for the team; and since that day, City have always had the support of me and my Dad. It’s obvious. It’s ‘City till I die.’

I don’t remember much about the match itself because I was 4 (almost 5) years old. All I remember was we were in division 2, Danny Tiatto was sent off about 15 minutes into the match and we lost 1-0. Why I chose City after watching that I’m not quite sure, it must just be in my genes. But I don’t regret it one bit!

My first City match was against Southampton in March of 96, the one where Georgi Kinkladze burned four defenders before chipping the keeper for a goal. It was absolutely glorious, and it further affirmed my love for the club. CTID!

Being a Yank, soccer has been an interesting distraction every 4 years when the USA qualifies through CONCACAF and then plays in the World Cup. This all changed when my son began playing 4 years ago. What a wonderful, year-round family activity for us. As our progression into the sport continued, our good friends from Stockport piqued our interest in both the EPL and their team – MAN CITY.
This fall my son turned ten years old. It just so happened I had a weekend off, frequent flier miles I was about to lose, and a crazed idea to fly to Manchester for a game. It just so happened to be a glorious weekend of weather and an unbelievable drubbing of Pompey. Our entire experience (the tour before the game, the kind staff of MCFC, the bobbies, etc…) was unbelievable and too much for words here.
Tennessee is a long way from Eastlands, but our support continues as we plan our next trip across the pond.
