I think it was a belated 9th birthday present. My Brother-in-law Ron took me. Can’t remember how we got there but the first time I saw the green pitch and witnessed the atmosphere, its something that doesn’t ever leave you.. We stood in the stand at the side of the kippax and I remember I couldn’t see so during the match I asked Ron if I could go on his shoulders to which he agreed – probably not a popular decision with people behind us and with hindsight, as a 9year old, I was probably too old to be going on anybody’s shoulders, anyway, after a short time Ron had to put me down because he was feeling dizzy.. Meanwhile on the pitch City were beating Liverpool 3-1 and thanks to “My first City game” I’ve been able to remind myself of two facts which, over time had been somewhat forgotten -A) who the city scorers were; channon, royle and kidd and B) I didn’t know the attendance – 52,000 – All in all it was an unforgettable day. I went on to persuade my brother that blue was the colour and I was proud to take my son to his first game at COMS.
