1977 and City are in a 3 way battle for the champinship with Liverpool and Ipswich. A potential title decide looms at Maine Rd against Bobby Robsons Ipswich. The crowd was in excess of 42000 and for a yong lad more familar with watching Bury at Gigg lane infront of 3000 the atmosphere and buzz around the old ground was electric. A tight game saw City take the lead only for Ipswich to peg us back.Well into the second half and sat directly behind the nets in the Noth stand a corner was sent over and met by Dave I’ve got an Iron Head Watson. Nothing to unusual about that until you realise that Mr Iron head was actually stood on the edge of the 18 yard box. The ball flew towards the top corner faster than a Peter Lorimer thunderbolt and despite the valiant efforts of keeper and fullback blasted City back into the lead. City won and I was hooked. Cue 32 yrs of pain.

I was 10 and it was my first game at Maine Road and can remember the crowd was massive that day. I was sat on the barrier with the other kids in the Kippax stand corner flag near the north stand and Dave Watson rose about 100 feet in the air and powered in a bullet header. I was hooked and my Dad bought me a Dave Watson badge in the souvenir shop.

I was at that game and remember the buzz around the ground vividly. That Dave Watson header is one of my most memorable experiences at any football match. Ever.
